Episode 004: The Mystery of Agatha

Some Things We Will Never Know

The mysterious disappearance of Agatha Christie was one of the first fascinations about a literary hero that I ever had. She left her home, the clothes she was wearing in her car, and left everything she knew. They never found out where she went, and she never talked about ever again. I read many biographies and autobiographies looking for clues into that brief lapse of memory in her life. What happened? Why did she do it? She never gave it away in her writings or her autobiography, and maybe we don’t need to know.

You hope that there is a reason that made Agatha think it was worth it to try to escape a world that was crumbling out of her control. Her life reflected her stories, but that was the one story she never wrote down. I admire her for that. She wrote so many novels, gave us so many fond friends in those books, did so much for her fans—apparently she hated Poirot at the end of her writing life but kept it going for her fans—and yet she was able to keep one thing for herself a secret.

We all have those moments, don’t we?

We hope you enjoy this episode.
